A
faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has stormed the headquarters of
the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja. The aggrieved
house of representative candidates who stormed the INEC headquarters did this
in order to probe the continued delay of the Supreme Court to act on the
judgement in respect of the rightful winners of the National Assembly seats in
Anambra state in the 2015 general elections. The entrance to the commission was
filled with the protesters as at 8am. They were chanting solidarity songs and
most of them displayed placards demanding that INEC issues their representatives
certificates of return to resume at the National Assembly.
Hon
Tony Office, who spoke on behalf of the other aggrieved candidates, expressed
his dismay at Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC chairman who was reported to
have denied them audience despite the letters sent to meet him. While blaming
INEC for their biased position on the matter, they also blamed Amina Zakari,
the former acting chairman of INEC, for their plight. Hon Tony Office stated
that Zakari, who is now a national commissioner, ran the affairs of INEC as at
the time their names were struck out from the election list.
Although
the protesters were prevented from entering the INEC premises, the leader of
the INEC security team allowed the representative of the aggrieved candidates
to enter the premises and deliver the letter. Meanwhile, PDP members clear more
reps seats in Rivers state. The released results according to INEC showed that
the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won most seats in the recently announced
Rivers rerun election. Aniedi Ikoiwak, the resident electoral commissioner, announced
the results and the winners at a media parley.
